At the Red Bull Ring, Aron Canet took second place in qualifying, missing out on the pole position by just 0.058 seconds.
After yesterday’s official announcement of his contract renewal, Aron Canet is proving his competitiveness also in Spielberg, just as he did in Silverstone. The Spaniard of the Fantic Racing Moto2 team has been one of the frontrunners since Friday’s first session. He continued with a great pace during the practice, qualifying directly for Q2 with the fourth fastest time. In qualifying he came close to pole position and confirmed himself in the front row. In tomorrow’s race it will be crucial to start well to be able to fight for the victory until the very end.
For Xavi Cardelus, the GP of Austria started as an uphill battle. On Friday, he lacked a bit of feeling with the bike. In practice 2 and qualifying, his sensations and lap times improved, but not enough to allow him to advance to Q2. In tomorrow’s race, he will try to bounce back, starting from 30th on the grid.
Aron Canet:
“I’m doing very well on a circuit where I’ve struggled since my time in Moto3. I will try to fight for victory because I have the potential to do it, but it won’t be easy. There are other very fast riders. My performance here has improved and it is also thanks to my crew chief Jairo. My team makes me feel very comfortable, also because they won here last year and therefore have a lot of data to work with. At the beginning of the season, we started very well, then we got a bit lost trying to improve the set up. We are now back to our base and the results are proving us right. It may be that the weather changes tomorrow, we must be ready to fight for victory in any condition.”
Xavi Cardelus:
“Compared to yesterday, the feeling has improved a lot. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, we are just missing a little bit to close the gap and to be able to fight with the riders up front. The race is tomorrow and I want to give my 100%.”
