Fantic’s Aron Canet close to the podium at the Italian GP
The Spanish rider crossed the finish line in sixth place at Fantic Racing Moto2’s home round in Mugello. Xavi Cardelus placed 23rd.

Fantic Racing’s home Grand Prix saw a twist already before the start. The race direction decided to reduce the distance to 12 laps, due to an incident in the Moto3 race that had caused a red flag.

Heading off the third row of the grid, Aron Canet had a strong start, it only took him 3 laps to reach the top 5. His race pace was consistent and Aron was waiting for the right moment. With just 4 laps to go, the Portuguese GP winner even took over the lead. The level of competitiveness in the race was very high, Aron fought for the podium until the last lap. In the tussle, he eventually finished in sixth place after having set the best lap time in the race.

For Xavi Cardelus Mugello has always been a difficult track that doesn’t suit his riding style very well. However, Xavi was able to improve considerably session after session. Starting in P29, he managed to keep a constant pace that allowed him make up some ground, finishing in P23.

Aron Canet"It was exciting to race the Italian Grand Prix with the Fantic Racing Team as it was their home GP. In the race I gave my 100%, we only missed a bit of speed on the straight. We showed once again how competitive we are. We are ready to face the next races."

Xavi Cardelus"It was a tough race, we expected more after the work we did throughout the weekend. We struggled on the race pace more than we thought. Apart from the result, I think it was our best weekend so far."

Roberto Locatelli, Team Manager Fantic Racing Team: "The reduced race distance didn’t allow us to use the strategy we had thought of. Aron is one of the strongest riders in the category and has adapted to the shorter race. He worked his way up from the ninth position to sixth place, fighting for the podium until the last lap. We wanted to get on the podium and celebrate the Italian GP in the best possible wayconsidering the great race of Canet. This result motivates us even more for the next race in Assen. For Cardelus it was a more difficult race, even if he managed to keep a good pace and gain some positions."
